A black fly is any member of the family Simuliida and there are over 1800 species of black flies recorded . Almost all black flies gain nourishment  by feeding on the blood of mammals, including humans although the males feed mainly or nectar from fruits and plants. Black flies are usually small, black or gray , with short legs and antennae. They are a  common nuisance for humans and are considered pests because they  spread several diseases.
