  • Also known as Common Puffin and sea Parrot, it is a small well adapted seabird and is the only puffin native to the Atlantic Ocean.



  • The Atlantic Puffin is a bird of the cold waters of the North Atlantic Ocean . This species of Puffin has a black crown and black pale grey cheek patches and white underparts.



  • Its broad boldly marked red and black beak and orange legs contrast with its plumage . Their Multi-colored bill and penguin-like coloration has given them the name Sea Parrot among locals
  • Atlantic Puffins spend most of their lives one sea as their water resistant feathers are able to keep their body warm while swimming Atlantic Puffin flap their wings to swim on the surface and under water.




  • Atlantic Puffins spends the autumn and winter ini the open ocean of the cold northern seas only to return to coastal areas at the start of breeding season in late spring . They nests in clifftop colonies digging a borrow in which only a single white egg in laid.




  • The baby puffin grows rapidly within 7 weeks it is fully fledged and marks its way at night to the sea and swims away from the shore and does not return to land for several years.




  • Atlantic Puffin are certainly a unique species as they have excellent diving capability Reaching up to 60 cm on diving alone they typically hunt sand eels capelins and hakes.




  • Atlantic Puffin are also excellent fliers . They are just as good fliers as they are divers reaching up to speeds of 50 mph by flapping their wings up to 400 times per minute. It is the official bird symbol for the Canadian province of Newfoundland Labrador
